1928 Born Carl Woese (biologist at UIUC). Discovered a new kingdom of life – prokaryotes, eukaryotes and now archea. [“I think Woese has done more for biology writ large than any biologist in history, including Darwin”]
1943 Born, Jocylen Bell Burnell, astronomer, discovered pulsars/neutron stars. Did not receive a nobel prize.
1988 Die Hard (the greatest action film ever made) hits the big screen
